The Carrefour Group's raison d'être: "To be the leader in food transition for all".

Aligning strategy 2020 with Carrefour's raison d'être

Carrefour's raison d'être is a continuation of the "Carrefour 2022" transformation program launched in 2018 and crystallizes the commitment made by Alexandre BOMPARD, the Group's Chairman and CEO, to act in favor of the food transition. By enshrining its raison d'être in the Preamble to its Articles of Association, Carrefour has made this commitment the foundation of its action:

"Our mission is to offer our customers high-quality food, products and services that are accessible to all, across all distribution channels. Thanks to the skills of our employees, our responsible and multicultural approach, our local roots and our ability to adapt to production and consumption patterns, we aim to be a leader in the food transition for all."

In its press release, Carrefour defends the creation of a program resulting from "an in-depth reflection by the entire company on its identity, its activity and its future (to) be the leader in the food transition for all".

Carrefour's ambition to be the leader in food transition for all has been recognized for the fourth year by the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.[1] (DJSI), which ranks Carrefour among the TOP 5 food retail companies for its CSR policy, and by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

Reaffirming Carrefour's responsibilities and commitments in the midst of a health crisis

The first confinement highlighted the "frontline" workers, particularly those in the food industry, reminding us that their work was what kept the population fed.

Braving the danger of contamination and the stress induced by this extraordinary situation, Carrefour employees enabled the French to restock their supplies at a time when telecommuting was becoming massively established in France.

So, a week after the first containment came into effect, Alexandre BOMPARD published an open letter to all Carrefour employees to reaffirm the Group's responsibilities to employees and customers:

  • "The first of these responsibilities, the greatest, is you, your health and that of your loved ones."
  • "Our responsibility goes even further: we want our entire Group to live up to the exemplary behavior you demonstrate."
  • "Our responsibility, finally, is to hold on. Together."

Alexandre BOMPARD concludes by declaring: " You are the public food service".

In this context, Alexandre BOMPARD has waived 25% of his fixed remuneration for two months, and the fixed remuneration of Executive Committee members has been frozen for 2020.

In addition, they were asked to waive 10% of fixed remuneration for a period of two months. Finally, the Board of Directors decided to reduce the proposed dividend for 2019 by 50%.

Carrefour is also committed to "the Covid-19 generation". Alexandre BOMPARD has presented a plan to hire 15,000 young people on permanent contracts or work-study contracts by 2021, and a €500 grant to finance the driving license of every young apprentice.

"We're the biggest private employer in France, and what I've decided to do is to reach out to these young people.
